As long term residents of the Macedon Ranges we have seen a few changes over the years. We have also learnt about some of the Macedon Ranges best kept secrets. We wanted to share our recommendations for the perfect Macedon Ranges experience.
No trip to the Macedon Ranges is complete without a visit to a winery or two. We have mentioned a few favourites before, Mount Towrong, Curly Flat & Hunter Gatherer. However, we are going to talk more about wineries next time. Today I want to tell you about our Gin Distilleries. That’s right, not only are we a renowned wine region, but our gin is off the charts too. We are totally in love with Big Tree Distillery in Newham. Run by the gorgeous Gary & Catherine, a trip to their stunning farm distillery is a must do. I’m still not sure which is my favourite, but their award winning Elegant Dry Gin is pretty special.
A trip to Hanging Rock should be on everyone’s list when they come to the Macedon Ranges. Even though the story is completely fictional, there is something intriguing about the park. Hanging Rock is very important to the area’s indigenous peoples. The site was used for sacred ceremonies and initiations, however they avoided venturing to the rock’s summit, which they believed to be inhabited by evil spirits. After your hike, stop at the charming Hanging Rock Cafe for coffee or lunch. If you are looking for something a bit different why not try Hanging Rock Llama Treks.
Mt Macedon has long been home to the homes of the rich and famous. A drive over the hill and you will find yourself imagining who lives behind the hedges. There are actually several properties that open their gates to the public, so you can see what lies beyond. Forest Glade and Tieve Tara gardens are open daily for most of the year. A stunning way to spend an afternoon.
When it comes to eating you really can’t go past historical Piper Street in Kyneton. In fact, Piper Street is a destination in itself. With shopping boutiques, bars, cafes and of course the restaurants, you could easily spend a day wandering from one end to the other. Both Source Dining and Midnight Starling have been awarded a hat in the Age Good Food Guide, and offer outstanding food. Midnight Starling also has a private dining room, perfect for large groups and special occasions. If you are looking for something a little more casual Fook Shing, Little Swallow Cafe, Major Tom’s and the Spaghetti Bar are all worth checking out.
Getting outdoors and enjoying the stunning countryside is one of the highlights of this region. The Campaspe River walk in Kyneton, Trentham Falls and Black Hill Reserve all offer great walks that are suitable for all ages. The local farmers markets, held every Sunday are a popular way to meet with the locals and sample some of our fresh produce.
No matter what season, the Macedon Ranges truly is an absolute gem. Only 45 minutes from Melbourne, it is the ideal weekend getaway destination.
